Stand Up! is a one-of-a-kind modern art painting by artist Janet Antepara. This piece transforms an oppressive command into a message of empowerment. Angry and aggressive paint strokes once spelling “Shut up woman” are reworked into “Stand up woman,” symbolizing the rewriting of patriarchal narratives and embodying resistance and reclamation.
The composition uses the symbolic tension between blue and pink, colors long tied to traditional gender roles and creates a chromatic dialogue about shifting power and reclaimed identity. Layers of pink tones, organic forms, and a symbolic garden rise over the earlier harsh marks and blue forms, expressing renewal, growth, and strength. A hidden illuminated message—visible under light—reads, “Stand up for your rights, for your freedom", reinforcing the work’s call to empowerment and playing with the idea of being enlightened.
Created for a series benefiting Rose Haven in Portland, Oregon, the piece also incorporates black‑and‑white rose cutouts as a tribute to Rose Haven and the community it supports. Stand Up! will be officially unveiled at Rose Haven's Reigning Roses Launch Party on 3/8/26. This piece was created to give back through art so 20% of the proceeds will be donated to Rose Haven.
