Boxed In is a one-of-a-kind abstract painting by artist Janet Antepara.
I came up with the idea for this painting after filling out the 2020 US Census questionnaire. When it was time to select my race, I realized I couldn’t identify with any of the options: White, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, or Asian. Like many Latinos, I ended up checking the "Some Other Race" box, which felt unsatisfying.
Fast forward to 2025, I just read that race and ethnicity will now be combined into one single question instead of two and the new options will be White, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Asian, Middle Eastern or North African, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander and HISPANIC or LATINO. This is more like it!
This painting is currently at Star Gallery and Gifts in Portland, Oregon.
