Boxed In is a one-of-a-kind abstract painting by artist Janet Antepara.
I came up with the idea for this painting after completing the 2020 US Census questionnaire. Things got interesting when it came down to selecting my race because I found myself not being able to identify with any of the races listed: White, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native and Asian. So as many Latinos do, I had to check the Some Other Race box which seemed a bit unsatisfactory at the time. Then I realized how impossible it would be to fit all Latinos into one or two race categories so for now or until the US Census Bureau comes up with a box that lists: Indigenous Central, South and North American, Southern European, Western, Southern and Eastern African with a splash of Middle Eastern, looks like I'll be checking the Some Other Race box on the next Census.
